Borlänge-based LCD development centre, Swedish LCD Center, is more than doubling its manufacturing area. A new site will house a clean room with a production line, and the centre believes the expansion will create up to 30 new jobs.
Set up two and a half years ago, Swedish LCD Center today has some 20 employees. The development centre, which aims to spin off successful products or business ideas, is owned by an organisation representing local authorities and electronics companies.

Acquiring a new site in the vicinity of Borlänge's so called Technology Valley, the centre is now adding 1,000 square metres to its existing 600 square metres of manufacturing space.

"The existing clean room and production line will be moved to the new premises. At the same time, we are building a new clean room and a production line of the same scale. In this way, we can use one line for glass-based LCDs and one for plastic-based LCDs," explains Kent Skarp, Swedish LCD Center's MD.

The new site will be operational in April, and the production lines will have a capacity of 30,000 units each. The site will also house a complete mechanical workshop.

"New production methods are constantly developed. Plastic displays could soon be manufactured on reels instead of one by one, and this would require new machines which we will have to build ourselves," Kent Skarp tells Elektroniktidningen.
