American semiconductor firm Atmel is setting up its second design centre in Sweden. Located in Sundbyberg, near Stockholm, it will focus on wireless communication, especially baseband technology for 3G systems.
"Initially, the new centre will collaborate with Socware, but very soon it should become independent," says Atmel's Apostolos Tzelidis, manager for the Nordic region.

Towards the end of the year 25 people are expected to work on designing baseband chips in Sundbyberg. So far, recruiting is said to be running smoothly.

Manager for the centre will be Carola Faronius, recruited by Atmel from Ericsson Radio.

In June 2000, Atmel set up a design centre in Norrköping within the system-on-chip cluster project Socware. The focus is on RF technology and the designs are made in BiCMOS for the company's SiGe process.

According to Apostolos Tzelidis, the centre in Norrköping is up and running. So far, about ten engineers have been recruited, but here too the target is 20-25 as soon as possible.

Both centres will be engaged in product development.
